PROGRAM OVERVIEW
Succession planning is critical to the future of a family business. Awareness of the challenges expected during the transition phase of succession is vital for any family business decision-maker.

The purpose of this one-day-and-a-half seminar is to familiarize family business leaders with the succession challenges and issues they need to consider to successfully transition the family business to the next generation. The lecture workshops will provide possible remedies to overcome challenges when passing the baton, especially in light of new business objectives that include non-financial considerations atypical of family businesses.

This workshop—composed of lecture discussions, a case study, and an inter-generational family business simulation—aims to accomplish the following objectives:

  1. Appreciate the uniqueness of a family business, the issues facing it, and how to address them;
  2. Evaluate the impact of history and reputation on the objectives and time horizons of family businesses;
  3. Evaluate the usefulness of the family constitution as a governance structure for a family business;
  4. Simulate possible issues the next generation will likely face and how the present generation should prepare for them;
  5. Come up with concrete resolutions on how to successfully transition the business to the next generation; and
  6. Learn from the insights of fellow participants on the issues they face and how they resolve, deal with, and prepare for the
